Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah

The mantra addressed to Mahalakshmi, built on the bija śrīṁ.

What it says

Śrīṁ is the seed syllable associated with Lakshmi. Like other bijas it is sound rather than vocabulary and is not translated. Mahālakṣmyai is the dative of Mahālakṣmī; namaḥ is the bow.

The ending -yai is the same dative form you will see in the Saraswati and Durga mantras — sarasvatyai, durgāyai. They are grammatically the same shape, addressed to different names.

When it is chanted

Daily by many households, and particularly through Navratri and at Diwali, when Lakshmi puja is the central observance of the evening. Friday is the day most associated with her in weekly practice.

How it is counted

One repetition per bead, 108 to a mala. The mantra is longer than a bare name, so a mala commonly takes fifteen to twenty minutes at an unhurried pace.

Some traditions specify a rosary of lotus seeds for this mantra rather than rudraksha or tulsi. If you are counting on a phone rather than beads, that distinction does not arise — worth knowing it exists.
